It’s coming up to that time of year again where the nights are becoming darker quicker and the temperature is rapidly dropping both in the day and in the evening.
Here at Taxi Choice Insurance, we know this time of year is extremely busy for taxi drivers so please keep safe and be careful on the roads whilst working. Therefore if you’re starting a shift in wintery conditions, try to stay in the highest gear that you can and keep your acceleration low. By doing this, can stop you from “wheel spinning”, however, some newer cars are now equipped with a “winter mode”, be sure to check your car manual to see if you have this function.
When are driving on your shift, make sure that you keep a close eye on your speed, this is to ensure that your stopping distances from the car in front are just right. The UK weather isn’t great most of the time, let alone in winter, therefore if it is raining, it is advised that you leave double the distance between you and the car in front, in comparison to what you would in dry conditions.
If you begin approaching a bend in winter conditions, make sure that you have reduced your speed before you begin to turn the vehicle. However, if you do end up losing grip of the car, do not panic. Just make sure that you remove your foot from the gas pedal and your wheels are point in the correct direction.
It is almost inevitable that you will end up driving in dull, gloomy weather conditions in winter, such as heavy rain and snow, if this is the case; make sure you use your dipped headlights. Some people may believe that daytime running lights will be enough to travel in, however, sometimes they do not light up the back of your car. Be sure to remember that if your visibility goes beneath 100m, put your fog lights on.
We hope that these tips have been useful to you and you all take care over the winter period. If you would like to speak to a member of our team please do not hesitate to call us on; 0333 200 0089.
